Dental implants look, feel and function like normal teeth.

Dental implants are the most advanced dental solution for people who want to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth. It encompasses the latest technology and is the closes artificial treatment to replacing “a tooth with a tooth”. The ‘root’ part of the tooth is made of biocompatible titanium which promotes fusion of bone onto the implant surface which in turn ‘osseointegrates’ the implant into the jaw bone thereby anchoring it.

On average it takes between 3-6 months after the implant is placed before a crown or bridge is placed to restore the aesthetics and function.

The second appointment is when the dental implant is placed. It is a minor oral surgical procedure. It is usually done under local anaesthetic in the dental surgery at Ferny Hills Dental. Sometimes bone grafts are required. Post-operative discomfort is usually minimal and normal activities can usually resume after 24-48 hours. The titanium implant is left for 3-9 months for the bone to fuse with the implant.

Once the implant is anchored to the jaw bone the crown, bridge or denture is made and attached to the implant. This usually takes two visits.
