Crowns
Accordion Sample DescriptionDental crowns are used to restore strength, aesthetics and function to damaged teeth. It is like a helmet that protects and reinforces the tooth underneath and restores the natural shape and appearance of the tooth. This is compared to a filling where there is some tooth and some filling, both the filling and tooth can break off over time and sometimes if it’s a bad break then it may need to be extracted. At Ferny Hills Dental, we proudly support local – so, all the crowns are made local here in Ferny Hills, Queensland to ensure quality. The crowns are made in a local laboratory by an expert technician. We use the highest quality dental porcelain, precious metal such as gold or a combination of porcelain and metal. Different materials are suitable for different people and their bite, function etc. All the above factors need to be taken into account when designing a crown. Our dentists will go through the options required to restore your tooth back to normal function.
When a tooth is damaged to the extent that its strength is compromised such as:
- When there is a large filling on the tooth, the remaining tooth structure is weak and break under biting forces
- when there is a crack in the tooth, the crown is used to hold the tooth together and prevent/slow down further problems
- To protect and reinforce the tooth after root canal treatment. A tooth in this situation is often already heavily restored or discoloured or both and needs extra protection to protect the tooth and the root canal.
- To improve aesthetics, shape, color of teeth
This takes two appointments.
The first appointment is similar to having a filling done except it takes longer. The tooth is prepared so there is room for the crown to fit over the tooth. We then take an impression of your mouth and send it to a local laboratory. For front teeth we will sometimes ask you to visit our technician to get a shade taken to ensure the crown will be as natural as the adjacent teeth. This takes approximately 2 weeks. During this time you will have a tooth-coloured temporary crown which looks like a normal tooth over the tooth to protect it. At the second appointment, we take the temporary crown off and after a few checks the crown is cemented in place.
Crowns are strong and durable and are designed to last many years with proper maintenance and care.
Our friendly staff will thoroughly go over the maintenance and care of your crown with you to ensure you get many years out of it.

BRIDGE
A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. The existing teeth on either side of the gap are crowned and the gap is bridged across with an additional tooth that fits in the gap. It is cemented so it is fixed in the mouth and looks and feels just like a normal tooth. It is a great option to replace missing tooth/teeth especially if the neighbouring teeth are heavily filled and would benefit from being crowned. It’s like killing two birds with a stone! Our dentists at Ferny Hills Dental will thoroughly assess your teeth to let you know if you are a suitable candidate for a bridge or discuss other options.
